Meari is the Korean word for echo. I founded it in July 2026 to bring Korean performance to audiences on the East Coast — a Chwitadae of around twenty players, and traditional dance presented alongside it.
Teaching
Teaching came before performing, and it has followed me everywhere. First in Korea, then in Northeast China, dispatched by the Overseas Koreans Foundation, and now around New York and New Jersey.
In each place I have taught teachers as much as students, so that the music stays in the community after I leave. Today I teach Danso — the Korean vertical bamboo flute — to teachers at Korean language schools, and online from anywhere. Students have ranged from teenagers to people in their eighties.
Neuru
A YouTube channel of Danso recordings. Each video is filmed close on the hands, with the notation written into the subtitles, so you can see the fingering and hear the note at the same time.
It is where most people meet this instrument first.
Woosung Jung is a certified holder of Daegeum Jeongak, National Intangible Cultural Heritage No. 20 of Korea. He plays Daegeum, Sogeum, Danso and Taepyeongso, as well as the percussion instruments Janggu and Buk.
He has worked as a performer and educator in Korea, China and the United States, and has directed local ensembles including a Danso ensemble, an instrumental ensemble, a Janggu ensemble and a Chwitadae.
